The internet has lied to you. Your plants are fine. Here's what's actually true.
The Lie: Plants that say "low light" will survive in your windowless basement.
The Reality: "Low light" means "bright indirect light" in plant speak. No houseplant thrives in darkness. Most low-light plants need at least some natural light.
What Actually Survives Darkness:
The Fix: Get a grow light. $20 solves most "no window" problems.
The Lie: Water every Monday. It's easy to remember.
The Reality: Plants don't know what day it is. They respond to soil moisture, not calendar dates.
The Fix: Check soil before watering. Stick your finger in. If dry 1-2 inches down, water. If not, wait.
The Lie: If a little fertilizer is good, more must be better.
The Reality: Overfertilizing burns roots, builds up salt in soil, and can kill plants. More fertilizer = dead plant, not big plant.
The Fix: Use fertilizer at half the recommended strength. Less is more.
The Lie: Add rocks to the bottom of pots for drainage.
The Reality: Rocks create a perched water table. Water sits ON TOP of the rocks, right where the roots are. This INCREASES rot risk.
The Fix: Don't put rocks in pots. Use a well-draining soil mix instead.
The Lie: Mist your plants to give them humidity.
The Reality: Misting provides humidity for about 30 seconds. The water evaporates almost immediately. It does almost nothing for actual humidity.
What Actually Increases Humidity:

The Fix: If you need humidity, get a humidifier. Misting is a waste of time.
The Lie: Your snake plant is cleaning your bedroom air.
The Reality: The NASA study was for SPACE STATIONS. You'd need 1 plant per 100 square feet to have any measurable effect. Opening a window does more in 5 minutes.
The Fix: Plants are beautiful. They make you happy. They're not air purifiers. Get a HEPA filter if you actually need clean air.
The Lie: Plants die without direct sunlight.
The Reality: Many plants evolved on the forest floor, under canopies. They prefer filtered light and would actually burn in direct sun.
The Truth: "Bright indirect light" is ideal for most tropicals. Direct sun is for succulents, cacti, and citrus.
The Lie: Plant looks sad? Water it.
The Reality: Yellow leaves are more often caused by OVERWATERING than underwatering.
The Diagnosis:
The Fix: Check soil before watering. Don't assume.
The Lie: You must use filtered or distilled water. Tap water is poison.
The Reality: Most plants are fine with tap water. Some sensitive plants (calathea, ferns) prefer filtered because of fluoride sensitivity.
The Truth:
The Fix: Don't overthink water. If your plants are thriving, keep doing what you're doing.
The Lie: Succulents are desert plants. They never need water.
The Reality: Succulents need LESS water than tropicals, but they still need regular water. They just store it for drought periods. They can die from underwatering.
The Fix: Water succulents when leaves look slightly wrinkled or soil is completely dry. About every 2-3 weeks typically.
The Lie: Plants grow better in bigger pots.
The Reality: Plants only need to be repotted when root-bound. Repotting too often causes transplant shock and overwatering problems.
The Signs You Actually Need to Repot:
The Fix: Leave the plant alone unless it's clearly root-bound.
The Lie: Put pebbles and water under your plant. It increases humidity.
The Reality: The water evaporates, but it evaporates into the ROOM, not around the plant. The humidity effect is minimal and short-lived.
What Actually Helps:
The Fix: If you need humidity, buy a humidifier. Pebble trays are decorative at best.
The Lie: North windows are useless for plants.
The Reality: North windows provide consistent, gentle light all day. Many plants THRIVE in north-facing windows.
Plants That Love North Windows:
The Fix: North windows are actually great for many plants. Don't dismiss them.
The Lie: Plants need less water in winter, so overwatering isn't a problem.
The Reality: Overwatering is WORSE in winter because:
The Fix: Water LESS in winter, not the same amount. Check soil before watering.
The Lie: The plant section at Home Depot knows how to care for plants.
The Reality: Big box stores sell plants. They don't specialize in them. The care tags are often wrong or overly generic.
The Fix: Research your specific plant. Don't trust store tags. The internet (and this site) is more reliable.
Trust science. Check your plants. Ignore the myths.
