Rule #1: Identify first. Treat second. Start here: Pest ID Guide. A lot of "pest problems" are actually watering/light issues… or dust.

If you buy nothing else (Top 4)

1) Yellow sticky traps

Best for: fungus gnats + general monitoring
Kensizer Yellow Sticky Traps β†’

Use these as your early warning system. If you suddenly catch adults, you can stop the problem before it becomes a saga.

2) Mosquito bits (BTI)

Best for: fungus gnat larvae in soil
Summit Mosquito Bits β†’

BTI is the "be nice first" option for gnats. Make BTI tea (soak bits in water), then water as usual for 2–3 weeks.

3) Insecticidal soap (ready-to-use)

Best for: aphids, mealybugs, light spider mite issues
Safer Brand Insecticidal Soap β†’

Spray coverage matters more than the brand. Hit undersides, stems, and leaf joints. Repeat every 3–5 days for a couple weeks.

4) 30x/60x loupe (tiny microscope)

Best for: confirming spider mites, thrips, scale crawlers
JARLINK 30X 60X Loupe β†’

This saves you from treating the wrong thing for weeks. It's also weirdly satisfying.

Nice-to-have add-ons

Neem oil concentrate (optional)

Best for: ongoing prevention / persistent problems
Harris Neem Oil Concentrate β†’

Use sparingly. Don't spray in full sun. Test one leaf first if your plant is dramatic.

Systemic granules (ornamentals only)

Best for: heavy infestations you can't keep up with
Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insect Control β†’

This is the "I have a life" option. Use responsibly, avoid edibles, and be mindful around pollinators.

How to actually use the kit

  1. Isolate the plant (or at least move it away from your favorites).
  2. Confirm the pest with a loupe if needed.
  3. Start with mechanical control: shower/rinse leaves, wipe stems, remove heavily damaged leaves.
  4. Then spray: insecticidal soap, full coverage, repeat.
  5. For gnats: sticky traps + BTI, and stop keeping soil wet all the time.
Fast triage: If you see tiny black flies near soil, treat for gnats first. If you see webbing + dusty stippling, assume spider mites.
